A lot or fewer carbohydrates? What about fat and protein in your food?
For some, it is a good experience to cut down on carbohydrates in their food.
Others eat a so-called Mediterranean Diet and others eat food without any meat in it at all.
There is no single diet or any one way to eat that is the correct one.
The most important thing is to discover the way to eat that suits you and your needs.
Research concerning food and diabetes shows that your body is better at regulating the amount of sugar and fat in your bloodstream if you eat fibre-rich foods such as whole grain cereals, vegetables and fruit as well as fish and lean dairy products.
Based on this research, the Danish Diabetes Association has prepared 5 diabetes-friendly dietary recommendations.
Eat fewer carbohydrates.
Choose high-quality carbohydrates.
Eat less ultra-processed food.
Eat more of the so-called basic foods.
Select healthy fat.
The dietary recommendations from the Danish Diabetes Association will help your body achieve a more stable blood sugar.
If you eat fewer carbohydrates, your blood sugar will increase less.
This is because the more carbohydrate you eat, the more your blood sugar will go up.
It's especially the so-called simple carbohydrates that cause your blood sugar to go up quickly.
Therefore, if you choose to cut down on the amount of carbohydrates you eat, it is particularly important to eat fewer of those.
Instead, choose high-quality carbohydrates such as whole grain rye bread, whole-grain pasta and brown rice, all of which have a high content of dietary fibres and whole grain cereals.
By choosing basic foods rather than ultra-processed food, you will feel more full for longer and get the nutrients your body needs.
Therefore, prioritize vegetables, legumes such as chickpeas and beans, lean dairy and meat products, eggs and fish rather than candy, cake, crisps and fast food.
You will get healthy fat from products such as vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, mayonnaise, tartar sauce, avocado, pesto, olives and fatty fish.
By selecting healthy fat, you are taking the fat in your bloodstream into account.
If you need help to balance your diet, ask your doctor or go directly to the health care centre in your municipality.
