If you have lost weight due to a lack of appetite, loathing of food, or nausea, there are many things you can do.
If you have an illness like diabetes or heart disease, and you have received guidelines on appropriate food, then you should contact a clinical dietician for advice and guidance about your current situation.
There are several ways to increase your intake of energy and proteins:
Eat more protein by first eating the protein sources on the plate, which means eat meat, fish, eggs, cheese and the dairy products first.
If you can eat more, then eat some mashed potato or vegetables.
You can enrich your food by adding fats, such as mayonnaise, butter, pasteurised eggs, cream, oil, remoulade, avocado, nuts and almonds to your diet.
You may eat ready meals with a high content of energy and protein.
There are various custom-made ready meals, and you can speak to a dietician about which will suit you.
Also choose drinks with energy and protein, rather than water.
Such as whole milk, low-fat milk, cocoa, buttermilk and cultured milk.
You can also have light ales and juices.
And you can enjoy a beer or a glass of wine, if your doctor allows.
You can drink nutrition drinks, and you may need to try several to find your preferred taste and variant.
Ask your doctor for a green prescription, which provides a discount on nutrition drinks from the pharmacy.
Enrich your food with powder.
There are different types of powder that you can add to food to increase the energy and proteins.
Many of these have no taste, and can be added to both cold and hot meals, and to drinks.
Hear more about various products at the pharmacy or drugstore.
You may increase your appetite by decorating the dish and placing the food nicely in small, delicate portions.
Making food seem more manageable to eat.
You can use small plates and glasses.
This ensures small portions, and often makes food and drink seem more appetising.
Don’t underestimate the difference that colour and consistency makes.
It’s a good idea to eat the food when it’s newly prepared.
Food that stands for a long time begins to look less tasty and tastes bad.
And try to notice whether something affects your appetite in a positive or negative way.
For example, your appetite may be affected by a particular food, by dining outside, by eating with others, and perhaps cold food, rather than hot, affects your appetite.
Try to drink fresh beverages, it could be carbonated drinks with citrus or lime.
Vary your beverages — it makes you more likely to drink.
For example, you can drink juice, soda, juice-based nutrition drinks mixed with a bit of sparkling water and mint.
Maybe you can avoid food loathing and nausea by avoiding the kitchen while food is being cooked, if the sight and smell of food make you loath it.
Make sure that you ventilate well during and after cooking.
You should eat frequent and small meals throughout the day, rather than main meals.
Try to eat 6–8 meals a day.
A meal can be any sort of energy intake, like a cup of cacao with cream.
Carbonated drinks like cola and other types of soda may relieve nausea for some people.
And if fatty food gives you nausea, it may be a good idea to add tangy and fresh flavours like chopped herbs, finely chopped ginger, or lemon and lime juice.
