Most people want to stay at homes as long as possible and perhaps eventually die there. There may be many reasons for this: Perhaps the familiar surroundings; that you decide things here; You can continue your routine and be as close to your partner and family as possible during the last time.
But it can also be tough to stay at home. For example, if you need so many assistive devices that your home is almost transformed into a hospital. At some point you may get so weak that you don't have the energy to go outside. Then you may feel lonely, if you for example live alone and don't see other people as often as before. Sometimes, due to your illness progression and practical conditions, it isn't possible to grant your wish to stay at home. You may need care and nursing that requires healthcare professional to be near you 24 hours a day. Perhaps there's simply no room in your home for all the devices you'll need.
It's also important to take into account the people around you. If you live with a partner and perhaps have children at home, their needs must also be taken into account. Therefore, it's a good idea to talk to your relatives, doctor or other healthcare professional close to you, to find the solution that's best for the whole family.
If you wish to die at home, consider how that can be done. How will it affect the family if I become bedridden and need lots of help? How much can I, and do I wish to, ask of my loved ones? Would it be nice if one of my loved ones could stay with me daily in my last days? Can my home be modified or redesigned? Is there space for assistive devices? Can the rest of the family live with a home that looks like a hospital? Can the other family members maintain a life with jobs, schooling and leisure time?
Some want peace and quiet, for others, being close to their children, grandchildren and neighbours is the most important. You know your own needs and wishes best. They may change during the progression of illness. It's good to consider what other options there are, early on.
