Fungal coatings in the mouth are not uncommon during a serious illness. If you have oral thrush, you can see the white coating or redness in the oral cavity. If often happens that food will taste different, and many feel that everything tastes of cardboard. You may also experience some difficulty in swallowing, or feel a clump in your throat. You can get oral thrush because, for some reason, the chemistry in your oral cavity has changed. And this change is due to a lowered immune system, and therefore the bacterial flora changes in connection to your illness.
Sometimes you can see that you have a coating on your tongue, on the gums or palate, and sometimes you can actually see it in your throat as well. If you have oral thrush, you may have less of an appetite, or nausea, and unfortunately your doctor will not always be aware that some of your symptoms are due to oral thrush. So have a look at your tongue, or ask your doctor to check it. If you've been sick for a while, the oral thrush may take longer to treat. Often you will get a medical treatment for it, and you may have to take tablets, and you may even have to apply an anti-fungal agent straight to your mouth. If you're not sure that you have oral thrush, contact your doctor to determine whether it is oral thrush or not.
There are some things you can do to prevent oral thrush, or if you already have it: Good oral hygiene is important, and this means cleaning your mouth several times a day by brushing your teeth with a soft toothbrush. It's also important that you rinse your mouth after each meal. It's also important that you visit the dentist frequently.
Also avoid mouth dryness, as it can make the oral thrush feel worse. Make it a daily habit to check your tongue for fungus. If you see fungus on your tongue, you can use a soft toothbrush to carefully remove some of it. If you use inhalant medication, it's important that you rinse your mouth after taking your medication. If you wear dentures, you must remove them several times a day and clean them. There are also different over-the-counter products that one can use for discomfort in the oral cavity. Speak to the pharmacist about what's right for you, or speak to your doctor about what they would recommend.
