Lymphoedema is a form of swelling, which can occur if the lymphatic system is damaged. This means that the fluid cannot be transported away sufficiently. Lymphoedema can occur in connection with cancer surgery, where lymph nodes in for example an armpit or groin are removed. The lymphatic system can also be damaged in connection with radiation treatments for cancer. The swellings can occur immediately after surgery or treatment, but they can also occur later. If you have a history of cancer and you experience swelling of an arm or a leg around for example the genitals, please contact your doctor so you get the right treatment. Your doctor can determine if it is lymphoedema that's causing the swelling, and the doctor can refer you to a lymphoedema therapist. It'll usually be a physical therapist who is specially trained to treat that type of swelling.
