Life before and after Hanne's new hip - Hanne (60) and Allan (64) are married. Hanne has had hip replacement surgery.

I was tired when I got home from work and have had a hard day, I exerted myself physically. It was difficult to do very much when I first got back home. I have also been limited towards you, because there have been many things I haven't had the energy to do with you, because I've been tired and worn out, and not been able to do much. Yes, that is true.

Gradually before the operation you slowly developed a grimmace - you do have a high pain threshold, but you didn't just have a straight face, you wore a frown. You felt "I have to get through this", that's how you thought and acted. Then, after the surgery came rehabilitation, and the basement stairs felt almost like the courtyard to hell: "Will I ever get down that flight of stairs?!"

In a relatively short time you managed to muster a walk down the stairs to the basement. And that's when the frown turned upside-down. While at the rehabilitation centre, you were able to see what the people who were more advanced in the process could manage. That also encouraged you to work harder. You accepted the challenge, and felt better and better about yourself.

But I was really surprised, because I have always been opposed to those types of gyms. It never appealed to me in any way, especially not with other sweaty women - or sweaty men, for that matter. But it has been really good because there was a purpose, and it worked.

You haven't been negative. You've been helpful, and you've been good at going where you needed to, and you didn't mollycoddle. You knew that I didn't want that. No, you've not been carried through more than necessary.

The only thing I can say that I was annoyed over - it wasn't you. It was my crutches. It was your crutches. When you needed the loo at night and the crutches were just out of your reach, so you couldn't grab them and they fell to the floor with a big bang - then I really woke up. And it didn't just happen once. I hadn't yet found out that they were much more stable if they were turned upside down. I only found that out when I didn't need them anymore.

But yes… They have been returned, and we got over that - period.
