The doctor’s examination of your hip

When we need to examine you to see if you have osteoarthritis in your hip, we will ask you to remove your pants and stockings so that we can see your entire leg. You keep your underpants on during the examination.
You will typically be asked to lie down on the examination table. This is when the doctor will start by looking at and feeling your hips and legs. The doctor will examine the movement in your hip and also how the movement in your knee joint.
The doctor will test how much your legs can be moved in relation to the rest of your body. Bending, stretching and how much the legs can be moved outwards to the side and turning movements will be examined.
The doctor will also often examine your other hip joint for comparison. Usually, the doctor will also ask about symptoms in your back and examine this if there is suspicion that the pain in your hip comes from here.
It will also be relevant to examine whether your legs are the same length when you are standing.
