You should not give your child medicine for a longer period of time without a doctor’s orders. This also applies to non-prescription medication and natural remedies. If your child is under two years, you must always consult your doctor before you give medicine. This is because medicine can make it more difficult to see symptoms of illness in your child.
When your child needs medication, it is important that it is administered correctly. This means that you must do what is stated in the patient information sheet or what your doctor or pharmacist has explained to you. Too much medicine may be dangerous and too little medicine may not work.
If your child has difficulty in taking pills, it may be helpful to choose drops, oral liquids or suppositories if this is possible. Liquid medicine does not taste as bad if it is cold. Sometimes it also helps if one explains why the child needs to take the medication.
Also, speak with your doctor about which options there are for making it easier for your child to take medicine. Your pharmacy can also advise you.
As a parent of a child that needs medicine, it is important that you make sure that your child takes the medication in the correct manner. Explain to the child why the medicine is necessary.
If you have any doubts about the medication for your child, you can always ask your doctor or pharmacist.
