When you have type 2 diabetes, there can be a lot to think about. Fortunately, there are many places where you can get help and support. When you have type 2 diabetes, it is usually your own doctor or perhaps a nurse at your own doctor’s, that you are most in contact with concerning your disease. You may be surprised that you will not be treated at the hospital, but in most cases this is not necessary.
The doctor or nurse will tell you about various things that affect the treatment of your diabetes. For example, it can be about why you should learn to measure blood sugar and what the numbers mean, why it is necessary to take medication, why you need to check your eyes, teeth and feet, and where you get it done, what you can do to live a good life with diabetes, what's good to know about food and physical activity, and what help can you get. Consult your doctor or nurse if you have any questions about your diabetes and your treatment. Remember that there is no such thing as stupid questions. It is better to ask one time too much than one time too little. You can also bring a partner or friend to your doctor or nurse. Then you are 2 people asking questions and listening.
You can also apply for assistance and support in your municipality. Your doctor can tell you what assistance is available to you. Assistance is free of charge. For example, you can receive guidance about food and physical activity. Here you can meet others who also live with type 2 diabetes.
Once you have diabetes, you can apply for subsidies for your diabetes care aids. These are for example the aids you use when you measure blood sugar or take insulin. Your doctor or nurse can tell you which subsidies you can get and where you apply.
The medication that your doctor or other therapists prescribes should be purchased from a pharmacy. In the pharmacy you can get free medical counselling. Medication counselling can help you get started on your medication. In addition to your doctor, you will also encounter other therapists in connection with your diabetes.
Among other things, you can encounter a foot therapist, an eye doctor and a dentist. The foot therapist examines how your feet are doing. For example, he checks the blood circulation and sensitivity of your feet. You can see more in the film “How do I get a subsidy for a chiropodist?”. The eye doctor checks for changes in your eyes. It is free to go to an eye doctor in Denmark, but remember that you have to make an appointment yourself and make it clear that you have diabetes. At the dentist, they check your teeth for inflammation of the gums and tooth decay. Your dentist assesses the extent to which you can receive a subsidy. The subsidy depends on how healthy your teeth are.
It is important that you see all your therapists regularly. When you are with your therapist, always make an appointment for when to come the next time.
