If you have diabetes, you can get a subsidy for chiropody.
You get the referral from your own doctor or where you go for diabetes check-ups.
See the film “How do I get a subsidy for a chiropodist?”.

If you have never been to a chiropodist before, your first visit will start with a foot check-up.
A foot check-up consists of a series of examinations, where the chiropodist, among other things, tests your sense of feeling in your feet.
This is to assess your risk of ulcers on your feet.
You will also have your blood flow checked, because it determines your ability to heal any ulcers on your feet.

Your feet will be examined for misalignment and stiff joints that can help change your walking.
This can cause you problems other places in your body.
Your chiropodist can help you prevent problems by making inserts for you to put in your shoes.

Your chiropodist will also check for changes in your skin and your nails, and guide you on how to fix them.
For example, dry skin can be reduced with a rich cream, and you can relieve the pain of in-grown nails with nail clamps.

The result of the screening forms the basis for finding the best treatment for your feet in cooperation with your chiropodist.
The result also determines which subsidies you can receive.
If you change your chiropodist, your new chiropodist can retrieve your previous foot check-up in a database, so your treatment can continue according to plan.

A foot examination by your own doctor or in an outpatient clinic cannot substitute the examination by your chiropodist.
