When you have dysfunctional breathing, you may cough frequently. Others often yawn, even if they slept well and enough. Others, in turn, find that they have to clear their throat or that they sigh a lot. If you have a frequent tickly cough, it is important to try to stop coughing because it tires and distracts you and because it maintains incorrect breathing. When this happens, stop coughing. Close your mouth and hold your nose. Your body will probably try to cough, but hold back and suppress the need. Hold your breath for 5-10 seconds. Release your nose and make a strong swallowing movement to swallow your saliva. Finally, breathe calmly through your nose 15-20 times. To learn how to use this method, try suppressing the coughing when it starts. Gradually, you can stop it before it begins, by holding your breath. Eventually, you will be able to stop the cough just by pausing your breathing, without holding your nose. You can use the same method if you yawn or clear your throat frequently: Stop it by closing your mouth and holding your nose, pause your breathing, swallow deeply and then breathe through your nose.
