Artificial knees and hips are made of metal and plastic. Despite the fact that these are materials in which the composition and the treatment are specifically intended for them to be attached to bone, there will always be a risk that artificial knee or hip joints will loosen.

However, they should have a relatively long shelf life. One cannot say that an artificial knee or hip joints must be replaced after 10 years.

Most knee and hip replacements lasts considerably longer than that. As time passes and you use your artificial joint, it will wear out and it may need to be change again later in life.

In general, the younger you are and the more active you are, the more likely it is that the artificial joint will need to be replaced at a later date.
