GLA:D stands for Good Life with Arthrosis in Denmark. Arthrosis is better known as osteoarthritis. GLA:D is a concept that applies to you, if you have a sore knee or hip due to osteoarthritis.
GLA:D recommends that treatment of people with knee and hip arthrosis starts with education, exercise and weight loss. These three things have proven to be effective in reducing pain, so you can function better in your daily life and thereby improve your quality of life. The aim is to teach you to deal with your pain and train your knee and hip appropriately, via education and exercise.
GLA:D is a push to get started, so the purpose is that after completion of the course you'll feel equipped to continue on your own with the exercises, and continue to use what you've learned along the way. Only the exercises being done have effect.
GLA:D is performed by physiotherapists, and consists of an initial interview and assessment with a physiotherapist. In addition, a combined teaching and training process, and finally a follow-up after completion of the course, to evaluate the effect of the treatment.
During the course we will touch on "What is arthrosis?" "What risk factors are there?" "Exercise - why and how to do it?" "Everyday activities" and "Help to help yourself" - In other words, what you can do to feel even better. Part of the course is also that some of the questions you have get clarified, so you don't feel restricted after the course, but have clarity on you may and can do many things.
The course consists of a 6 week total training program, including exercise twice per week. The aim of the exercises is that you become familiar with them and use them in your everyday life when you have finished your training program.
Whether you have just been diagnosed with arthrosis or had it for several years, you will benefit from a GLA:D program. The course can help to maintain what you already know, and help you feel better.
What I got out of it, is the importance of exercising. How much it means in relation to HAVING osteoarthritis. How much you can remove stiffness and pain in your body by exercising. This means that I feel more secure when I walk. Sometimes when I walked I had the feeling that I was about to fall over. The strength around my knees has helped with this, so I no longer feel insecure. I've also noticed that I have don't feel as much pain when I go up and down stairs as I used to. So in that way it's been great.
