The doctor’s examination of your knee

When we need to examine you to see if you have osteoarthritis in your knee, we will ask you to remove your pants and stockings so that we can see your entire leg. On the other hand, you will often be able to keep your dress or short shorts on.

You will typically be asked to lie down on the examination table. This is when the doctor will start by looking at and feeling your knee. The doctor will examine the movement in your knee and also how your leg moves in your hip and ankle joint.

The doctor will test how stable the ligaments around your knee are. This is done both while your knee is stretched out and bent. This is when the doctor will try to move your lower legs from side to side as well as forward and backward in relation to your thigh bone.

The doctor will also examine your knee cap to see whether it is tender and whether it moves normally.
